St. Andrew’s Anglican Parish – Director of Music St. Andrew’s Anglican Parish is seeking a part-time Director of Music – organist/pianist/choir director – whose music can appeal to all ages of our congregation and to a small choir. Music is an important part of our liturgy and church life. The successful candidate must be a team player who can work with the clergy and the Liturgy Advisor Committee; have a passion for music, with a commitment to both traditional and contemporary styles; be open to new and creative challenges. For a position description see the post's description below: Qualified candidates are invited to send a résumé and a letter addressing their qualifications in the context of the position description to The Reverend Dr. Catherine Hall at stapriest@telus.net ***************** Proposed Position Description for a Director of Music St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Kelowna, BC Date: December 2011 Position: Director of Music (depending on qualifications and experience) Goals of Position: to create a vibrant music program in the parish that will appeal to parishioners of all ages. Responsibilities: To develop and lead the music program of the parish. We seek a director who will be an integral part of the life of the congregation, working with the clergy and as a member of the Liturgy Advisory Committee to develop a music program to serve the needs of the whole parish family including youth, children and families. Ø To select hymns, mass settings, Psalm settings and incidental music for all services, communicates with the office in a timely way to ensure all details can be included in the bulletin Ø To administer the music program, including tuning and maintenance of the instruments within the annual budget provided, to make annual budget proposals Ø To rehearse musicians and singers for the coming week, preparing music in advance of the seasons. To encourage and include new participation of singers and instrumentalists in the music program. Ø To play for Sunday services and special services in the Christmas and Easter seasons, and at other times as negotiated. Qualifications: able to play piano and organ competently, able to guide a music program that meets the contemporary and traditional music needs of the congregation, familiar with or able to learn about the Anglican liturgical patterns, able to conduct a choir, able to work collaboratively. Accountability: be accountable to the rector and wardens. Reporting Relationship: to the rector and wardens Time required: we anticipate an average of 8 hours each week including time for the services, for practices with the choir and other participants, and for music selection and practice. Time requirements are expected to vary by season. Term of Office: after successful completion of a three month probationary period, a one year appointment, renewable annually. There will be an annual review with the Rector. Orientation and training: working with the rector and choir, the Liturgy Advisory Committee and the Families and Children’s Minister.. Other resources and support: music library of the church, an annual budget for music, fine, well-maintained instruments including a grand piano, a small tracker organ and an electronic organ, copyright permissions, the resources of the office and secretary, encouragement from the Liturgy Advisory Committee, the choir and the congregation. Benefits: the privilege of the use of parish instruments and the use of the church for teaching purposes. The right to be the musician at any weddings or funerals held in our church. Compensation: Usually a fixed amount per month as negotiated, you pay for sub up to 3 weeks vacation per year, which cannot be at Christmas or Easter. The actual pattern of compensation is negotiable. Code of conduct: a criminal records check is required for this position. |
